Apple To Charge For iPad Update To iOS4

Stuff.tv are reporting that according to developers of apps for the iPad that Apple will charge a fee to upgrade your iPad to iOS4.

What this fee will be is as yet unknown and if it does happen then it's poor show on apples behalf, Android don't charge, nor Nokia.  Furthermore the upgrade for iPhone 3GS was also free so there can be no justification for this at all.

NBC and Time Warner inform Apple they'll be sticking to Flash

When the iPad bandwagon was launched in late January, ABC and Netflix quickly jumped onboard with tailor-made apps, while CBS and others started transitioning their content to HTML5-compliant formats, all in the name of not being left behind by the revolution. As it turns out, however, some content providers will be letting this ride pass them by, at least for the moment. The New York Post today reports that big media heavyweights Time Warner and NBC Universal have turned their noses up at the iPad's high entry demands and will be sticking to what works:

Sources said several large media companies, including Time Warner and NBC Universal, told Apple they won't retool their extensive video libraries to accommodate the iPad, arguing that such a reformatting would be expensive and not worth it because Flash dominates the Web.

According to the NYP article, these conglomerates have been emboldened by the forthcoming arrival of competing tablets from the likes of Dell and HP, and will be seeking their fortunes in the mobile space atop Adobe's winged stallion of web domination that we commonly know as Flash. This is a decision sure to end in tears -- we just don't know who'll be doing the crying when it all shakes out.

Apple iPad shipments now getting hopes up in UK and Australia

Apple selling more iPads than Macs !

There's no question that Apple is selling a ton of iPads, but would you have guessed that it's actually selling more iPads than all Mac sales combined? 


That's the case, at least at the moment, according to RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky, who says that Apple is currently moving about 200,000 iPads per week, compared to 110,000 Macs, though it still trails the iPhone, which is apparently racking up sales of 246,000 per week. 


Of course, we are just talking about analyst estimates here, and things could potentially swing back into the Mac's favor once the quarterly totals are added up.

Apple Now Accepting Cash For iPads (video)

Nothing like a little bad press to change corporate policy. Diane Campbell made US national news this week (seriously) when her attempts to purchase an iPad with cash were rejected. Apple's no-cash policy (credit cards and debit cards only please) was put in place by Apple as a means of ensuring that customers were sticking to the two-device limit -- a policy that was originally put in place in October 2007 in order to deal with high demand for the iPhone and, some would say, to keep the devices off the grey market. 


Well, some members of the US media got so feverish with affect rage that they lashed out at Apple with chants of "anti-American" and "anti-disadvantaged" (Diane is described as disabled and on a fixed income). Apple has reversed the policy: it now accepts cash just as long as customers sign up for an Apple account while in the store at the time of purchase. As for Diane, she got a free iPad and "changed a little piece of the world." We feel safer already.

I had set the text very large (36 point) so it would be seen on the video. In normal size, a *lot* of text will fit on the screen, of course. Another reason the Neo is good for this is that it supremely rugged, and despite being a full-sized keyboard is compact and light, perfect for travelling. Together these two machines make a compact and yet very flexible and powerful set for when you’re out.

(Note: should be said that at least for now, the iPad’s software (especially the lack of real file handling) does not make it a real laptop-replacement. But I think it could be one day.)

Chinese workers sue Wintek over iPad screen cleaner poisoning

If you've got an early Apple iPad, chances are its screen was cleaned with a banned substance called n-hexane, which releases a toxic nerve gas upon use. In January, 2,000 workers at Wintek's East China LCD plant went on strike, claiming the substance was poisoning them, and now 44 of those reportedly affected are planning to sue.

According to reports, the screen cleaner was originally used because it performed better than alcohol, but Wintek has since fired the factory manager who suggested n-hexane and discontinued its use. That didn't keep 62 workers from winding up in the hospital, however. The Guardian interviewed two hospitalized workers last week. 

Let's hope this lawsuit spurs government and industry to do something concrete about worker abuse.

Apple Sells One Million iPads in 28 Days

Apple today announced that it sold its one millionth iPad on Friday, just 28 days after its introduction on April 3. iPad users have already downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore.

“One million iPads in 28 days—that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.”

How to Jailbreak Apple iPad using Spirit
